Operetta is reborn in Latvia!
The Latvian Operetta Foundation was established in 2013 to combine the efforts of professional artists and the public to revive the popular operetta tradition in Latvia and to create a contemporary, multi-genre professional operetta and musical theatre with a troupe, orchestra and adequate facilities.
Based on classical values, the theatre will be innovative and open to creative experimentation, and will provide Latvian audiences with the opportunity to regularly enjoy wholesome productions in a wide range of musical theatre genres.

Patron of the Foundation
“There has to be an Operetta Theatre! This is especially important in these times when there is so much negativity in the world. Operetta is a way to get children used to music and theatre, so I think we need to start seriously approaching the Ministry of Culture and the government to finally support the Operetta Theatre financially. It should not be something that people do only with passion and out of their own good heart and personal dedication. Operetta has to be on a level – with good singers, good costumes and good sets. This genre also attracts tourists, and I myself saw my first operettas when I was travelling. No matter what country you are in, it is interesting to visit because this positive art can be understood without the language. Operetta is not displaced by opera, musicals or cabaret. It has its place. With operetta, Latvia could also become known in the world.

Mission and objectives
Fund's core business
The main activity and task of the Latvian Operetta Foundation is public benefit activity in the field of culture and charity and the shaping of public opinion with the aim of developing and popularising the genres of operetta and musical theatre more broadly.
The aim is for Latvia to have a fully-fledged professional Operetta and Musical Theatre and to return to the ranks of the cultural superpowers, while providing jobs for more than 100 young professionals. The absence of such a theatre in Latvia since 1995 has been presented as a threat to the country’s culture in the country’s cultural policy planning documents.
